Oxford International College, Week 2
On Monday evening, the Advanced University Programme students at OIC were able to partake in a friendly ping-pong tournament as well as some rounds of Uno which gave light to the Brazilian and Colombian variations of the game.
After the restful, student orientated Lazy Tuesdays’ schedule, the Activity Team prepared a more structured evening activity, “Mini Museum” an opportunity for students to reflect and practice their public speaking skills. They were asked to select 3-5 pictures from their camera roll which they believed represented them and would thus belong in a museum exhibition in their name, before presenting them to the rest of their class. Students were invited to consider the importance of being at ease while talking about their interests and achievements, especially in the context of university interviews.
A trip to the Museum of Oxford was scheduled on Wednesday afternoon, and after dressing up in replica Victorian costumes and learning about the history of the city through interactive displays. After our time in the museum was up and given the lovely weather, students were taken on an impromptu trip to Christ Church Meadows to make the most of the day. They passed by the college whose halls were famously used in the filming of Harry Potter, before settling under a weeping willow for some card games and a spot frisbee and volleyball.

According to students and staff alike, Thursday’s Trashion Show was certainly the highlight of the week! Once divided into groups, each team was allocated a classroom where they would have just under 2 hours to imagine and create an outfit out of recycled materials. This set up not only mimicked that of a fashion studio or “atelier” but also helped to instill some competitive spirit between the designers. The cafeteria was turned into a runway for the models to walk down where the designs showcased ranged from bridal to military – a true expression of the students’ creativity and resourcefulness! The students were also tasked with creating a short speech that explained their creative process, inspiration, choice of materials and the place of their work in the wider fashion world. Prizes were awarded for best design, best catwalk and best exposition.
On Friday evening, students enjoyed a couple matches of dodgeball before switching to football and basketball, both sports turning out to be highly competitive.
This weekend’s first excursion was to the harborside city of Bristol, where students were led on a walking tour of this cultural hub. Passing by the University and the Cathedral, students were able to admire the contrast between the city’s Georgian architecture and its contemporary street art – even seeing three works of graffiti created by the world renown Banksy! The afternoon was spent visiting the M-Shed Museum, an ode to Bristol’s local history, before reconvening in Queen’s Park.
