If you’re about to set off on your Bucksmore summer programme, and you’re not sure what to pack, then we hope this will help you to be fully prepared for an unforgettable experience. Whether you’re heading to Oxford, London or Brighton, knowing what to bring will help you feel comfortable, prepared and confident from the moment you arrive.
We’ve gathered insights from our Pre‑Arrival Webinar to help you pack everything you need – and nothing you don’t.
What we’ll give you
First thing to know is that when you arrive, you’ll be given
- A Bucksmore backpack which we’ll expect you to use for excursions
- A reusable water bottle to stay hydrated on the go
- An ID pass to allow you to be identified as a Bucksmore student
A note about the weather in the UK!
UK summer weather in July and August can be full of surprises. One moment it’s blue skies and sunshine, the next it’s a light shower or a sudden breeze. We always hope for the best, but plan for the worst weather!
Daytime temperatures typically range from 15°C to 25°C, so it’s rarely scorching but almost always pleasant. You’ll want to pack layers – think T-shirts, jumpers and a light waterproof jacket – so you’re ready for anything!
Your essentials – what everyone has to pack

Start with the basics. These are items you’ll need no matter which centre or programme you’re attending:
- A wash bag with toiletries
A toothbrush, toothpaste, shower gel, shampoo, sanitary products, etc. - At least one towel (if you’re staying in Brighton or at D’Overbroek’s)
- A bathrobe
- Comfortable clothes for warm and cool days
- A waterproof jacket and layers (see above)
- Trainers or comfortable shoes for walking and activities
- Sunscreen and a hat
- Your passport
- A printed Letter of Consent to travel – this may be required for border control so we always recommend you have this printed, and placed in your hand luggage, especially for students under 18.
- Your phone and charger
You’ll have free time each day to call home and take videos and photos – but you won’t be allowed to be glued to your phone for long periods of time – and you won’t want to!
Some extras you may need, depending on your programme
Check if any of these apply to you:
- English Foundation – English Plus Adventure
You’ll also need rain boots (wellies) or grippy water resistant walking shoes, a waterproof coat, trainers you don’t mind getting wet, swimwear and a large towel. All specialist equipment, like climbing harnesses, lifejackets and wetsuits are always provided. - Performing Arts (English Plus or Young Professionals)
You’ll also need to make sure you have plenty of comfy clothes and shoes/trainers so you can move about in them freely and confidently, for example during dance classes. - For all Young Professionals courses, English Foundation – IELTS Preparation and Pre-University AI & Computer Science students
Please bring a laptop for coursework and project work - For all Pre‑University Programmes
Please bring a smart outfit for the end-of-course celebration – think a shirt and trousers, a nice dress, or something you’d wear to a school party or family dinner. It’s not quite prom though, so don’t over-think it!
Money and valuables
- Key deposit
50 GBP key deposit – paid in cash on arrival and refunded at the end when your key is returned - Spending money
We suggest you bring between 50 and 150 GBP per week for snacks, souvenirs and spending money on excursions and outings.
You can store your passport, cash, medication and other valuables in the centre’s safe
Useful extras
Some other things you might find useful:
- UK plug adaptor
So you can charge your devices in your room - Notebook and pen
All learning materials are provided, but you might want something of your own to jot down ideas
Laundry and self‑care

You’ll do your own laundry with support from staff. It’s a good idea to know how to separate colours and use a washing machine. Laundry detergent and costs are covered.
Medication and health
- If you take prescribed medication, let us know before you arrive. We’ll collect it when you check in and store it safely. Our staff will help you take it as needed.
- We can also provide paracetamol, throat lozenges and antiseptic cream, but only if your parent or guardian has given permission in advance.
- If you feel unwell and need to see a doctor, you’ll be accompanied by a staff member. Medical costs are covered by our insurance, with a £50 excess paid by you.
- If you take regular medication, staff can help you stick to your routine – just make sure you’ve told us about it before your arrival.
Let us know in advance if you take any medication or have allergies – you can do this on the Student Portal.
Final things to check
- Your passport and visa or Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) (if required)
- Your flight details and printed travel documents
