How We Train Our Staff to Deliver Excellence

Written by our Operations Manager, Beth Kempster Rowston & Recruitment Manager, Jamie Leeds

At Bucksmore Education, delivering outstanding summer courses in the UK starts with our people. Behind every English summer course, every Young Professionals course, and every University Preparation (PUPP) programme, there is a highly trained, motivated team working together to create a safe, inspiring, and enriching experience for our students.

From Activity Leaders and Counsellors to Tutors, Academic Managers, and Directors of Studies, every member of staff undergoes comprehensive training designed to ensure they are confident, prepared, and supported throughout the summer and beyond.

Recruitment: Matching the Right People with the Right Roles

Our commitment to excellence begins with recruiting individuals who are genuinely enthusiastic about Bucksmore programmes and passionate about supporting young people. We carefully select staff who not only bring the right skills and experience, but who also demonstrate warmth, empathy, energy, and a clear commitment to creating a positive and inspiring environment for international students aged 10–17.

Candidates are assessed on:

  • Relevant academic, professional, or pastoral experience
  • A proven interest in working with young people and supporting their wellbeing
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to lead, motivate, and inspire students
  • Adaptability, teamwork, and thoughtful problem-solving in a dynamic summer school setting

This thorough, values-driven recruitment process ensures that every Bucksmore staff member – whether in a management role, a teaching position, or part of the activities team – is deeply invested in student welfare, committed to high academic standards, and motivated to deliver an exceptional and memorable English language summer school experience.

Comprehensive Pre-Arrival Training

Before arriving on site, all staff complete mandatory online pre-arrival training. This ensures everyone starts the summer with a shared understanding of expectations, policies, and best practice.

Pre-arrival training covers:

  • Safeguarding and student welfare
  • Health and safety procedures
  • Roles and responsibilities on site
  • Cultural awareness and inclusion
  • Academic delivery, including expectations for English language courses, Young Professionals programmes, and University Preparation (PUPP) courses

By the time staff arrive on campus, they are already equipped with the knowledge needed to support students effectively and confidently.

On-Site Induction: Turning Training into Practice

Once on site, staff take part in a dynamic, hands-on induction led by our Operations and Academic teams. This is where pre-arrival training comes to life — giving everyone the confidence, practical skills, and role-specific understanding needed before students arrive.

The induction focuses on keeping students safe, supported, and engaged, while helping each team member understand how their role contributes to the wider student experience.

On-site induction includes:

  • Safely managing residential and academic spaces, creating secure and well-supervised environments
  • Delivering engaging lessons and workshops, with clear expectations for academic and support staff
  • Running activities and excursions safely, balancing fun with robust risk management
  • Supporting student wellbeing and behaviour, recognising concerns early and responding appropriately using MyConcern
  • Understanding site-specific procedures, including safeguarding protocols, reporting lines, and daily routines
  • First aid training, delivered by a certified professional to the management team, ensuring trained responders are always available on site

Beyond the practical training, induction is also about building a strong, happy, and cohesive centre team. Before students arrive, staff are taken off site for an organised social evening, giving teams the opportunity to relax, connect, and bond outside the centre environment. This time together helps strengthen communication, trust, and collaboration across roles, so staff return feeling confident, united, and ready to support one another from day one.

Ongoing CPD and Academic Development

At Bucksmore, staff development doesn’t stop when the summer begins. We offer continuous professional development (CPD) sessions throughout the year, supporting our teams to grow, reflect, and continually improve their practice.

During the summer, Directors of Studies and Academic Managers have dedicated time built into the timetable to deliver CPD sessions to teachers and tutors. These sessions focus on:

  • Teaching best practice and lesson planning
  • Student engagement and classroom management
  • Supporting mixed-ability and international learners
  • Assessment, feedback, and academic progress tracking

By protecting time for CPD even during busy teaching weeks, we ensure our academic teams remain supported, confident, and aligned with Bucksmore’s high standards – particularly across our Young Professionals and University Preparation programmes, where academic rigour and progression are key.

Ongoing Support Throughout the Summer

Training at Bucksmore is continuous. Throughout the summer, staff receive ongoing guidance and support from Head Office, Centre Managers, Activity Managers, and Academic Leadership teams.

This includes:

  • Daily briefings and debriefs
  • Regular check-ins and mentoring
  • In-the-moment training and problem-solving
  • Opportunities to reflect on student feedback and outcomes

This hands-on approach allows teams to respond quickly to student needs and maintain consistently high standards across all centres.

A Culture of Reflection and Excellence

We actively encourage staff to reflect on their practice, share ideas, and learn from one another. Feedback from students, peers, and managers is used constructively to strengthen delivery and improve future programmes.

Staff complete both a mid-contract appraisal and an end-of-contract appraisal, designed to support professional development – identifying areas for improvement while also recognising and celebrating strengths.

This culture of reflection and continuous improvement is central to how Bucksmore delivers safe, engaging, and academically rigorous English summer courses in the UK, from English Foundation programmes to Young Professionals and Pre-University Preparation courses.

Why This Matters for Students and Parents

Because of our structured training, ongoing CPD, and strong on-site support, your child benefits from:

  • Confident, well-prepared staff
  • High-quality academic delivery
  • Robust safeguarding and welfare support
  • Trained first aid responders on site
  • Engaging activities and excursions
