This second week at Bucksmore has certainly been a busy one! Between three excursions, a rota stacked with amazing activities, and a particularly interesting project which had students step into the business world of the ‘Dragon’s Den’, it has been a week full of excitement and laughter! Here’s what our students have been up to this week…
Exploring Oxford – the Pitt Rivers Museum
After many new arrivals and a much needed rest, we started the week with an excursion to the Pitt Rivers Museum in Oxford. The day was spent exploring the collection of artefacts, better understanding English culture and enjoying the sights around Oxford. They rounded off the trip with a trip to our local shopping centre where they enjoyed the rest of the day, and began to make good friends with their classmates!
Jane Austen and Roman Ruins – Bath
After spending the previous evening studying the city of Bath and its history, our students were well-equipped for an in-depth tour of all the city had to offer! In the sunshine of the hottest day of the week, they explored popular sights associated with the author, Jane Austen, as well as the famous Bath Abbey and Pulteney Bridge. Many students stepped up during the tour to offer their own facts about each site and many pictures were taken! After some free time to explore the beautiful city independently, we all gathered again to tour the 2000-year-old Roman Baths. They had the chance to see how ancient Romans developed clean and heated baths, the religious and cultural significance of them, and even got the chance to drink some of the water!
A River Cruise and the Maritime Museum – London & Greenwich
This week’s London trip saw our students embark upon a Thames river cruise, passing by major London landmarks like St Paul’s Cathedral, the London Eye and Tower Bridge! The peaceful ride along the Thames brought us to Greenwich, famous for the Prime Meridian Line, where students freely explored the ships and the vintage market. We all reunited at the end of the day to explore the Maritime Museum which explores Great Britain’s voyages over the years.
Football, Egg Drops and Entering the Dragon’s Den – Activities
When our students have not been on excursion or in class, their schedule has been full of some incredibly fun activities! This week’s most popular activity was the egg drop: a competition where teams battled it out to make the best protection for an egg to be dropped from a series of heights. Parachutes, cushions and cages were made from the materials available before they were launched out of windows until only one remained. With the World Cup approaching the semi-finals, our students have been celebrating the tournament together: watching matches, preparing decorations for the countries participating, and developing chants to show their support!
This week’s project saw our students become entrepreneurs: developing a business idea and pitching it to a harsh panel of judges (their teachers). The standards were incredibly high with both their creativity and their English skills leaving our judges very impressed! However, the clear winners were the ‘Beapers’ team who confidently and professionally presented a new system for helping students manage their time!
It has been wonderful to see all of our students growing in confidence, both in the classroom and socially on excursions and activities! Their academic skills keep improving every day and we are proud of how each and every one is progressing. We look forward to sharing their progress soon as they continue in Oxford!
