Welcoming Our Students to Cambridge
Our first week at St. Catharine’s began with new arrivals, introductions, and a lively Welcome Festival. Students quickly started meeting people from different countries, settling into their accommodation, and becoming famliar with the centre. The welcoming atmosphere helped students feel comfortable while staff supported them through their first days in Cambridge.
Students then began their academic programme with tutorials, masterclasses, and specialist sessions designed to develop their knowledge, communication, and independent thinking. Alongside their Studies, they explored Cambridge during a walking tour through the city’s historic streets and university surroundings. Students also worked together during a Cambridge photo scavenger hunt, using teamwork and observation to find landmarks, complete challenges, and capture photographs around the city.
The combination of learning, exploration, and social activities helped students build confidence and form new friendships from the beginning of the programme.
Activities, Teamwork, and New Friendships
Throughout the week, out students took part in a varied programme of evening activities. During the Board Games Café, students relaxed after a busy day and enjoyed some friendly competition with their classmates. The session gave students another opportunity to socialise, communicate in English, and spend time with people outside of their usual friendship groups.
UK Sports Day brought plenty of energy to the centre. Students worked in teams, encouraged one another, and took part in a selection of fun, sporting challenges. The activity created a positive and competitive atmopshere while promoting collaboration and good sportsmanship.
Students also continued their academic development through the Cambridge Lecture Series, Masterclasses, and Debate Preparation. These sessions encouraged them to consider new ideas, express their opinions, and work constructively with others. As a team, our staff have collaborated closely throughout the week to balance academic commitments with an enegaging, supportive social programme.
Excursions Beyond the Centre
Our full day excursion to Thorpe Park proved to be on of the week’s highlights. Students explored the park with their friends, enjoyed the rides and attractions, and managed their time responsibly with their groups. The day allowed them to build independence while creating shared memories outside of the classroom.
The week also took students to London, where they explored the Natural History Museum, and completed a museum scavenger hunt. Students discovered exhibitions covering the natural world, while working together to answer questions and locate key displays.
After a packed lunch near the Albert Memorial, the group continued to Kensington Palace. Students explored an important part of British royal history and experienced another of London’s best-known cultural locations.
This first week has brought together education, culture, entertainment, and teamwork. Students have approached the programme with curiosity and enthusiasm, creating a friendly, and increasingly confident community at St Catharine’s, Cambridge.
