This week, the Bucksmore activity team organised a fantastic programme of trips and activities that focused on growing the students’ knowledge of history, culture, and the natural world, while also giving them plenty of opportunities to make new friends and settle into camp life.
On Tuesday, we welcomed new students from all over the world as they arrived on campus, each bringing their own cultures, experiences, and excitement for the weeks ahead. After getting settled into their accommodation and meeting the Bucksmore staff, the evening was dedicated to a series of fun icebreaker games designed to help everyone get to know one another. From team challenges to name games, it was fantastic to see friendships beginning to form so quickly, creating a welcoming atmosphere from the very first day.
Exciting Cultural Explorations
On Wednesday, students travelled into Oxford to visit the Ashmolean Museum. Home to an incredible collection of art, archaeology, and historical artefacts from across the globe, the museum gave students the chance to explore everything from Ancient Egyptian mummies to classical sculptures and modern art. The visit provided a fascinating insight into human history and culture, while also giving students time to explore one of Britain’s most historic cities.
On Friday, we took the students to the Historic Naval Port of Portsmouth, which gave them the opportunity to explore the shipyard and board the historic naval vessels on the museum’s site. This included Henry VIII’s famous warship, the Mary Rose, as well as the legendary HMS Victory. Students were able to visit several museums, learn about Britain’s rich naval history, and enjoy some free time at the end of the trip, allowing them to explore Portsmouth’s shopping district.
On Sunday, we organised a trip to Kensington Palace, Queen Victoria’s primary residence, where students were able to enjoy the self-guided tour at their own pace. In the afternoon, we walked to the Natural History Museum, which was full of opportunities for students to learn about biology, horticulture, and the palaeolithic era. The students particularly enjoyed the sections on dinosaurs and the deep ocean.
Keeping Busy on Campus
Back on campus, the week was equally busy. We organised a sports day offering a range of activities including basketball, football, run club, and the British classic egg-and-spoon race. Students also had the chance to watch the World Cup together, creating a fantastic atmosphere as they cheered on their favourite teams. To round off the week, everyone got involved in Buckmore’s recycling fashion show, where creativity and teamwork took centre stage as students designed and modelled outfits made from recycled materials. It was a brilliant way to end a week full of learning, adventure, and new friendships, and we are looking forward to everything the coming weeks have in store.
