King’s College week 1

A special Tuesday for Bucksmore. It is this day that marks the beginning of an exciting month ahead of us. Stamford Street apartments gradually wake up from its long hibernation, as the yard starts buzzing with the students moving in their rooms. Despite having done this for years and preparing for days, we can’t help feeling nervous, like the first time, for this moment. Fortunately, each student comes in with a smile on their faces, regardless of the long flights! We reciprocate with our friendly greetings, leading them to their rooms with bedazzling name signs on the doors. After a long catch-up nap for most of them, along comes dinner time with freshly made dishes from the in-house team at King’s College canteen. The plates being spotless must have meant a good impression for the students about their first meal of the course!

The next day starts young at 7.45, as we all get ready to introduce students to their modern classrooms in the Virginia Woolf Building. Still getting used to the new routines of a summer school, little did the students know that their days will be packed with learning, both through lessons and outdoor activities. They get to break the ice, while being aware of the rules to ensure a safe and productive summer.

We get accustomed to the UK in the most realistic way possible through visiting the British Museum and the London Museum, which exhibits the long history of the country, its relationship with other parts of the world, and this city that we are in. It has whetted our appetite to discover more of London throughout our time here.

In terms of learning, we take pride in our experience with the IELTS exam which characterises our centre. It is this appeal that students look forward to the most, and it shows through their constant participation in the lessons, despite the long duration.

After such an intense first week comes the winding down in the coastal city of Brighton on Saturday. We visit the Royal Pavilion – the symbol of Brighton, then get engaged in a range of activities such as playing basketball in an outdoor court. Others are satisfied with the treat of being on various rides in the Brighton pier theme park. We really have a good scream on the Turbo to let out the stress from the week. On the other hand, some prefer the tranquillity of lying down on the seaside, under the warm sunlight. This city has something to offer for everyone.
