A large contingent of Bucksmore OASP students at Brasenose gathered to watch France face Belgium in the World Cup semi-final on Tuesday night.
It was a great occasion. The match was projected onto the big screen for all to see. The Undercroft was decked out in memorabilia from World Cups of past and present, three-by-five foot Belgian and French flags were suspended next to the screen, flag-face painting was on offer. The bunting was well and truly out.
The balance of support in the room, without any Belgians but many French students on the programme, was decidedly more one-sided in France’s in favour than the match itself. Legend has it that the French students’ patriotic post-victory rendition of ‘La Marseillaise’ is still echoing around the annexe!
