The Bucksmore Young Professionals Architecture course experience
The objective of the Young Professionals Architecture course is to give students subject knowledge, a practical insight into the architectural profession, and enhanced language proficiency, with a primary focus on developing English fluency through meaningful, context-rich learning experiences.
You’ll study architectural history, concepts, and design methods through sketching, modelling, site analysis, and collaborative projects. Specialist workshops are paired with guided visits to architectural buildings and landmarks, where students connect cultural, historical, and environmental theory to real-world practice.
This combination of academic understanding, vocational application, and language development builds confidence, creativity, and transferable skills for those considering architecture, design, or urban planning as future careers. What is a Young Professionals Architecture Summer Camp?
A Young Professionals Architecture summer camp at Bucksmore offers high school students a practical introduction to careers in design, construction, and sustainability. Students learn how architects work—observing, analysing, and reimagining the spaces around them—while also developing communication and problem-solving skills in an academic English context.
Living on campus encourages collaboration and teamwork, while specialist workshops and site visits in Oxford and London bring architectural theory to life. From historic spires to contemporary eco-buildings, students experience the full spectrum of architectural styles and learn to connect history, culture, and sustainability with modern design practice. By linking theory to practice and combining this with English language development, the course provides a true insight into the professional world of architecture.

Subject Overview
This course introduces students to the fundamentals of architecture and design thinking, with a strong focus on skills used in professional practice. Students will:
- Explore architectural history, theory, and cultural influences
- Practise sketching, mapping, and modelling techniques
- Analyse how buildings reflect culture, politics, and identity
- Examine sustainability and the environmental impact of architecture
- Communicate and present design ideas visually, verbally, and in writing in English

Capstone Industry Project
The real-world Capstone industry project is developed and delivered by Class of Your Own, a UK social enterprise behind the award-winning Design Engineer and Construct! (DEC) learning programme.
Through this project, students work in teams to design a building, combining creativity with practical architectural knowledge. Upon completion of the two-week programme, students will receive a DEC award - an industry-recognised qualification endorsed by Training Qualifications UK.

The addition of an exciting and varied activity and excursion programmes embedded in the timetable, ensures you will have a well-rounded and powerful two weeks studying on the Young Professionals course.
Example Industry Workshops
Insider London
You will be guided through London on a Retail Design Tour, visiting the most iconic Mayfair streets to analyse the great success of the British heritage brand and the strategies of world flagship stores.
You will consider the changing world of high street shopping and how brands use technology, sustainability, and visual merchandising strategies to get consumers through the door.
Design Museum, London
Students engage with the museum’s collection of contemporary design objects to foster experiential learning.
Workshops will support students to gain new perspectives on the role of designers and the impact of design in everyday life. Additionally, students will delve into material exploration and the ethical responsibility of designers to actively seek novel and environmentally sustainable materials.
Our Students
My favorite part had to be the capstone project and excursions. I enjoyed going out and visiting the different landmarks of London and Oxford through boat or bus. It was also the capstone project, I loved learning about what the other students experienced and putting my own knowledge to the test!
Young Professionals has so many different things for you to experience and it allows you to meet new people. There is a strong academic focus which is a great opportunity to learn new things and make a decision about your career path.
Your home from home
You'll be staying in d'Overbroeck's, a remarkable independent school in Oxford. Teaching will take place in the modern Sixth Form building which provides contemporary classrooms, auditorium and numerous social spaces, making it the ideal location for the Young Professionals programme. Multiple boarding houses are situated close by to the school.

Daniel McDonagh
MA, PGCE, BSc (Hons)Daniel is the Teaching Development Manager with our industry and education partners, Class of Your Own. Teaching since 2008 in the UK, Dan has taught DEC (Design, Engineer and Construct!) since 2012 at Levels 1, 2 and 3 in an 11-18 Manchester school. In addition to being awarded the Institution of Civil Engineers “ICE 200 medal” for his outstanding contribution to raising awareness of the sector, Dan is a qualified teacher, a Specialist Leader of Education and holds a Masters in Education with a focus on creativity.

Oxford: Museum of Oxford
On this half-day excursion you will visit the only museum all about Oxford. The Museum tells the story of Oxford and its people through a range of social history objects and interactive displays.
Thames River Boat Cruise & Royal Museums Greenwich
Step aboard a cruise to Greenwich via the River Thames, taking in some of London’s world-famous sights along the way.
After lunch, you will explore the Cutty Sark, a historic sailing ship which was the fastest of its time!
Thorpe Park
Thorpe Park is a theme park located in Surrey, England with over 30 rides, attractions and live events.
You will be able to experience record-breaking roller coasters, water rides, and seasonal events alongside your new friends!
London: Buckingham Palace & Politics Walking Tour
You will embark on a walking tour of key locations relating to London’s rich political and royal history.
You’ll also visit the historic vibrant market area of Covent Garden. Following lunch you will enjoy a tour of the magnificent State Rooms of Buckingham Palace.
Oxford: Christ Church College
On this half-day excursion you will visit Christ Church College, an Oxford college and a city Cathedral sharing a unique historic space.
You’ll discover that Christ Church is an academic institution and a place of great historical significance.
Cambridge
Visit Cambridge and experience its historic waterways via a punting trip on the River Cam.
You will also have time to explore one of the 31 Colleges that make up the University of Cambridge – King’s College – founded by King Henry VI in 1441.
The Young Professionals Architecture course timetable
The Buckmore Young Professionals courses are designed as a two week programme to allow you the opportunity to complete the Capstone Industry project. Students wanting to stay for four weeks should choose a different subject option for the remaining two weeks. We will have different and varied excursions each week.

Travel and transfers
The moment you touch down in the UK, you’ll be looked after by Bucksmore staff. At the arrivals gate you’ll be met by one of our representatives and be escorted to your complimentary transfer or exclusive airport lounge (Heathrow only) to wait for your transfer.
If you’re using an airline unaccompanied minor service, you’ll be accompanied by airport staff to the Bucksmore representative on arrival, and we’ll also assist you on departure and wait with you until handed over to airport staff for your flight home.
