The Bucksmore Young Professionals Engineering course experience

The objective of the Young Professionals Engineering course is to simultaneously enhance students' subject knowledge and language proficiency, with a primary focus on the development of English language fluency, through meaningful, context-rich learning experiences. This approach fosters critical thinking and communication skills while promoting cultural awareness and the practical application of skills in real-world contexts.

This course teaches engineering concepts and methods through practical demonstrations and exercises. Here’s an overview of what we put into it and what you will get out of it:

What is a Young Professionals Engineering Summer Camp?

A Young Professionals Engineering summer camp at Bucksmore immerses students in the diverse world of engineering and develops their English fluency through practical, subject-specific contexts.

Through practical workshops and hands-on projects, you will explore key concepts in mechanical, electrical, and civil engineering. You work on real-world challenges and build a portfolio to prepare for your future studies in the field, and build confidence in using technical English.

Students live together on campus, fostering teamwork and collaboration, with excursions to Oxford and beyond enriching their learning experience. This camp is ideal for aspiring engineers ready to explore innovative problem-solving and design.

Subject Overview

This course introduces the principles and practices of modern engineering, balancing technical foundations with career-relevant skills. You will:

Explore the roles and responsibilities of engineers across disciplines

Capstone Industry Project

The Engineering industry project is developed and delivered by Class of Your Own, a UK social enterprise behind the award-winning Design Engineer Construct! (DEC) programme.

Students work in teams to tackle a real-world design and construction challenge, combining creativity with technical knowledge and professional communication. On completion, you will receive a DEC award—an industry-recognised qualification endorsed by Training Qualifications UK—alongside a portfolio of your hands-on projects, research, and evidence of English language development in a professional setting.

Example Industry Workshops

RI Crash Testing, L’Oreal Young Scientist Centre

You will become an engineer for the day, testing your own ideas by designing creative experiments.

In the Crash Testing workshop, you will learn how vehicles are designed to keep us safe in a collision and use their knowledge in a real-life crash test. The workshops aim to ignite a passion for scientific discovering and encourages curiosity-driven learning.

Silverstone Museum

Enjoy a tour of Silverstone itself to learn about the history of motorsport.

The various exhibits allow you to explore the wider aspects of racing, including medical support, the mechanics, safety, and via the Tech Lab, the technology and engineering. You will also take part in an interactive session where you can get hands-on with genuine motorsport items.

Your home from home

You'll be staying in d'Overbroeck's, a remarkable independent school in Oxford. Teaching will take place in the modern Sixth Form building which provides contemporary classrooms, auditorium and numerous social spaces, making it the ideal location for the Young Professionals programme. Multiple boarding houses are situated close by to the school.

Daniel McDonagh

MA, PGCE, BSc (Hons)

Daniel is the Teaching Development Manager with our industry and education partners, Class of Your Own. Teaching since 2008 in the UK, Dan has taught DEC (Design, Engineer and Construct!) since 2012 at Levels 1, 2 and 3 in an 11-18 Manchester school. In addition to being awarded the Institution of Civil Engineers “ICE 200 medal” for his outstanding contribution to raising awareness of the sector, Dan is a qualified teacher, a Specialist Leader of Education and holds a Masters in Education with a focus on creativity.

Nirmani Rathmayake

PhD Cambridge

As a PhD candidate and researcher in engineering at the University of Cambridge, Nirmani is dedicated to developing innovative solutions for medical engineering, with a particular focus on identifying patterns in the human body that may indicate heart disease. Nirmani's strong background in electronics, communication systems, and signal processing was cultivated through her bachelor's degree and further honed during her PhD studies. She has also enriched her expertise through research internships at prestigious institutions such as Stanford University and the University of Hong Kong.

Excursions

Our course programme includes two full-day industry workshops, plus three excursions per week. Two of the excursions are full-day and one is half-day. You can see an example two-week programme below.

London: Buckingham Palace & Politics Walking Tour

You will embark on a walking tour of key locations relating to London’s rich political and royal history.

You’ll also visit the historic vibrant market area of Covent Garden. Following lunch you will enjoy a tour of the magnificent State Rooms of Buckingham Palace.

Oxford: Christ Church College

On this half-day excursion you will visit Christ Church College, an Oxford college and a city Cathedral sharing a unique historic space.

You’ll discover that Christ Church is an academic institution and a place of great historical significance.

Cambridge

Visit Cambridge and experience its historic waterways via a punting trip on the River Cam.

You will also have time to explore one of the 31 Colleges that make up the University of Cambridge – King’s College – founded by King Henry VI in 1441.

The Engineering timetable

The Buckmore Young Professionals courses are designed as a two week programme to allow you the opportunity to complete the Capstone Industry project. Students wanting to stay for four weeks should choose a different subject option for the remaining two weeks. We will have different and varied excursions each week.

Travel and transfers

The moment you touch down in the UK, you’ll be looked after by Bucksmore staff. At the arrivals gate you’ll be met by one of our representatives and be escorted to your complimentary transfer or exclusive airport lounge (Heathrow only) to wait for your transfer.

If you’re using an airline unaccompanied minor service, you’ll be accompanied by airport staff to the Bucksmore representative on arrival, and we’ll also assist you on departure and wait with you until handed over to airport staff for your flight home.

The courses are designed to be delivered in a two-week period, therefore you will repeat the same project again if you opt for the same course. If you would like to stay for four weeks, we would recommend selecting a different subject offering, so that you would not be relearning the same elements. We also offer a Pre-University Preparation course for 15+ students who may like to experience a university studies course for an additional two weeks.

Yes, you can attend as a day student. We would recommend our residential options as a great way to meet other students and get involved in all the activities, but we understand that sometimes a day camp may be the best option. It would be the responsibility of the parent or guardian to bring students to the camp each day before the first lesson of the day. The price for day students will be quoted at a discounted rate, please contact us for more information.

Everything is included in the price, from the moment you arrive to the moment you leave. When you book onto a Bucksmore course, your accommodation, food (three meals a day and packed lunch on excursion days), tuition and academic materials, activity fees, entrance costs to excursions, insurance and UK airport transfers (conditions apply) are included as part of your course fees. Flights and visa costs are not included.

Arrivals and departures always take place on a Tuesday. Our friendly team of counsellors will already be at the airport waiting for your arrival. They will be wearing a Bucksmore-branded top and holding up a Bucksmore sign with your name on it. Once you have met the counsellor, they will either take you to our Arrivals Lounge (if arriving at Heathrow) or they might take you straight to your transfer, depending on the arrangements scheduled for that day. Once on your transfer to your centre, relax and get to know some of the other students you are transferring with. Upon arrival at the centre, you will be met by more of our team who will provide you with all the necessary information to get your time with Bucksmore off to a good start. The rest of the day is known as a 'lazy Tuesday', where students should get to know one another in a relaxed, calm, and safe environment. Get a good night's rest to combat your jet lag so you are ready for the fun days ahead!

Yes, you can keep your phone with you however you can't use it during lessons and activities where you are engaging with other students. Sometimes you'll use you phones to research information for projects during class time, in which case it would be supervised and you will need to follow the teacher's instructions. Of course, for a lot of the time, we'll expect your phones to be away so we can concentrate on speaking, discussing, laughing and having device-free fun in English!
