The Course in Detail

Students investigate core principles of environmental science and the challenges of sustainable development in a rapidly changing world. The programme combines earth system science, climate studies, and ecological economics with applied skills in research, fieldwork, and data analysis.

Through lectures, case studies, and practical activities, students gain insight into topics such as climate change, global inequalities, conservation, and renewable energy.

Applied projects give students the chance to explore solutions to real-world environmental challenges, while developing the critical thinking and research skills needed for university-level study.

Key Subject Areas

  • Earth System Science: Understanding the processes that shape our planet’s atmosphere, biosphere, hydrosphere, and lithosphere.
  • Global Climate Change: Examining causes, consequences, and policy responses to one of the defining issues of the 21st century.
  • Environmental & Ecological Economics: Exploring how economic models, policies, and incentives shape sustainability efforts.
  • Sustainable Development: Investigating the UN Sustainable Development Goals, indicators of progress, and challenges of implementation.
  • An Unequal Planet: Analysing how environmental issues intersect with global inequality and justice.
  • Research & Data Skills: Introducing methods such as fieldwork, surveys, GIS mapping, and remote sensing for environmental analysis.
  • Regenerating Environments & Communities: Exploring ecological restoration and community-based sustainability initiatives.

Example Lessons

  • The Science of Climate Change: How greenhouse gases alter earth systems.
  • Measuring Sustainability: Tools and indicators from the UN SDGs to local initiatives.
  • Economics of the Environment: Can growth and sustainability coexist?
  • GIS in Action: Using digital mapping to assess land use and environmental risk.
  • Fieldwork Project: Investigating ecosystems, biodiversity, or sustainability initiatives in the UK context.
