What is a Maths course?

The Pre-University Mathematics course (or 'math summer course' if you're used to US English!) at Bucksmore is designed to introduce students to advanced mathematical concepts and prepare them for university-level study at a British University.

Through workshops, problem-solving sessions, and collaborative projects, students will sharpen their logical reasoning, proof-writing, and analytical skills while applying mathematics to real-world and theoretical contexts.

Students live on campus and take part in excursions around Cambridge and top UK destinations, ensuring a well-rounded learning experience that blends academic study with real-world applications.

The Course in Detail

Mathematics underpins a vast range of academic and professional fields, from physics and engineering to computer science and economics. This course provides a balance of pure and applied mathematics, offering students the chance to develop both technical fluency and creative problem-solving skills.

Over two weeks, students will explore algebra, calculus, vectors, probability, and number theory, while also working with differential equations, modelling, and statistics. The emphasis is on mathematical discovery—developing curiosity, resilience, and a toolkit of strategies to tackle complex challenges.

Key Subject Areas

  • Mathematical Foundations: Logic, algebra, vectors, and proof-writing, including techniques such as induction, contradiction, and invariants.

  • Calculus & Modelling: Differentiation from first principles, integration as accumulation, and the use of calculus to model change in physics, biology, and economics.

  • Number Theory & Algorithms: Prime numbers, modular arithmetic, divisibility, the Euclidean Algorithm, and the Chinese Remainder Theorem.

  • Probability & Statistics: Conditional probability, Bayes’ Theorem, distributions, expected value, variance, and statistical modelling.

  • Differential Equations: Using first-order equations and integration techniques to model systems like cooling, motion, and exponential decay.

  • Combinatorics & Logic: Strategic reasoning, permutations, combinations, factorials, and the application of logic to problem-solving.

Travel and transfers

The moment you touch down in the UK, you’ll be looked after by Bucksmore staff. At the arrivals gate you’ll be met by one of our representatives and be escorted to your complimentary transfer or exclusive airport lounge (Heathrow only) to wait for your transfer.

If you’re using an airline unaccompanied minor service, you’ll be accompanied by airport staff to the Bucksmore representative on arrival, and we’ll also assist you on departure and wait with you until handed over to airport staff for your flight home.

Our online application process takes around 5 minutes to complete. You will need to enter the details of the student, including their passport number and current school. It's also important that we gather parents and guardians information as well. 

To reserve a space on this course, a £500 reservation fee is required, payable by credit card or online bank transfer. See our cancellation and refund policy. Upon completion of your application, we can provide pre-enrolment documents including a visa support letter.
