COURSE REQUIREMENTS

LANGUAGE LEVEL

Medicine requires a minimum of intermediate (B1) level English.

AGE RANGE

This course is suitable for students ages 14-17.

Academic Information

This course is led by Dr Jake Adams, a current doctor in the UK.

Each day in Session 1 through an interactive lecture, students will be introduced to a new topic essential for frontline doctors. In the first week, students will explore cardiac trouble including an introduction to reading ECGs; confusion and how to approach it in the elderly; and uncover some of the mysteries of the brain including what can go wrong with a stroke. In the second week,  students will cover the lungs, including how to read a chest x-ray; an introduction to the surgical abdomen and how to identify organs and functions; plus how to assess a sick patient. Students will also have the opportunity to ask Dr Jake Adam, any questions about life as a doctor.

In Session 2, students will apply and deepen their learnings, through ethics discussionscase discussions, using patient histories to find diagnoses for patients. Students will put their new skills into action with a virtual resuscitation simulation station. Students will also be set a project on a new theme each week. To enhance their presentation skills, at the end of the week, they will share their projects with the group.

To get ready for the course, students will receive 5 hours of pre-course material to complete, including:
•  Anatomy starter An introduction to the language of anatomy.
•  Diagnosis Students will learn about the different theories of diagnosis and how to avoid traps.
•  Atherosclerosis The pathophysiology of atherosclerosis, the problems it causes, and how it can be avoided.
•  Ethics  An introduction to the four pillars of medical ethics.
•  Grey Cases  Students will be given two patient vignettes and be asked to form a differential of causes and their top diagnosis.

Who is Dr Jake Adams?

Dr Jake Adams studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh, graduating in 2017 with a BMedSci (Hons) in Sports Medicine (First Class). He spent his Foundation Doctor years in Bristol and Yeovil, working a mix of medical and surgical jobs, General Practice and in the Emergency Department. This year Dr Jake is focusing on developing his interests in Emergency Medicine and Expedition Medicine. He is currently working in Yeovil, Somerset and from August will be joining the New Royal Infirmary in Edinburgh.

What is the course structure?

Students will have 40 hours of contact time over two-weeks, including 15 hours of medicine workshops and 15 hours of medicine project work and case discussions, plus eight hours of skills and careers workshops and two hours of guest speakers.  Sessions have been carefully structured so students around the world can join us in most time zones.
